Paris Saint-Germain are keen to open talks over Fabinho this week
The French giants are keen to recruit a holding midfielder in the New Year
According to L’Equipe, the French champions will look to speak with their Champions League opponents to kick-start talks.
Speaking in October, PSG boss Thomas Tuchel said: “We must have a third central midfielder to play in 4-3-3 or a three-man defence. It’s necessary.”
Tuchel has opted for a back three in recent weeks with Marco Verratti, Julian Draxler, Adrien Rabiot and Angel Di Maria rotated in midfield – but has used centre-back Marquinhos in there as an enforcer at times.
Despite the undoubted quality between that quartet, the former Borussia Dortmund manager understandably wants to add more physicality into the mix.
Fabinho has made just nine appearances for the Reds since his big-money move in the summer
The Brazilian impressed at PSG’s rivals Monaco in Ligue 1 and a return to the league could be on
And the 6ft 2in Fabinho would offer just that.
He has played just nine matches for Liverpool since his £43.7million move from Monaco in the summer.
He was reported as being “bored” with life on Merseyside at the beginning of November due to his lack of first-team chances.
PSG were impressed by the Brazil star during his time in Ligue 1 and even tried to sign him before Liverpool beat off stiff competition for his services over the close season.
Fabinho would add some much-needed physicality to the Parisians’ midfield
Marquinhos and Marco Verratti are just two of the players Thomas Tuchel has deployed in the middle of the park
The Reds take on PSG tomorrow night with their qualification for the knockout stages still very much in the balance.
If they manage to win in Paris, Jurgen Klopp’s side will go through unless Red Star manage to win their last two games.
They did suffer a blow today, though, when Tuchel confirmed both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are fit for the match at the Parc des Princes.
