Thierry Henry says he had to re-learn the game when he left Arsenal to work under Pep Guardiola

THIERRY HENRY claimed he was forced to “re-learn the game” under Pep Guardiola when he left Arsenal for Barcelona.

Henry, who has just taken his first job in management, also claimed head coaches are now under “crazy” pressure to win club football’s ultimate prize — the Champions League.

The new Monaco head coach said: “Pep is the reference for me. I had tore-learn at Barcelona how to play the game.

“You could fall asleep on Pep and he would still be talking about football.

“Everybody knows my relationship with Arsene Wenger. He showed me what it took to be a professional.”

Henry has returned to Monaco to replace sacked head coach Leonardo Jardim and takes charge of his first game at Strasbourg on Saturday.

The Arsenal great takes over a team 18th in Ligue 1 and struggling for form in the Champions League.

Henry added: “People define success now on whether they have won the Champions League that season and that is crazy.

“It is as if the league and the cup do not matter anymore, but it does.

“Success as a coach is about improving players and making them better. I will be judged on results, like every other coach, but if you can make players better and improve them, the natural consequence is results.”
