UEFA Champions League Group C, Matchday 1
Anfield, Liverpool
Liverpool 3 – 2 Paris Saint-Germain
Jürgen Klopp (Liverpool coach): “It was good, really good in all departments pretty much. It is so difficult to defend them, but we did. Good organisation and a big heart is always a good combination for defending. All 11 players were involved in that. A good performance against an outstandingly strong opponent; it was necessary we played good. The atmosphere was fantastic, so special to do these things in this stadium. It was nice.”
Thomas Tuchel (Paris Saint-Germain coach): “Playing here is a big challenge. We did it with confidence and courage, especially in the first half. I was happy, despite the two goals we conceded. Our fight-back was incredible. To be losing 2-0, here at Anfield and come back to 2-2 is very difficult. The team really did something extraordinary and we had the chance to score that third goal. But we have to accept the result.”
UEFA Champions League Group A, Matchday 1
Stade Louis II, Monaco
AS Monaco 1 – 2 Atlético Madrid
Leonardo Jardim (AS Monaco coach): “Our opponents were more rigorous and more effective than we were. Experience made the difference. We went 1-0 up but after that we lacked maturity and conceded. [Antoine] Griezmann’s talent made the difference. Then we conceded again from a set piece. At this level, every detail makes a difference.”
Diego Simeone (Atlético Madrid coach): “It was a tough match. Their opening goal hurt us, but we reacted. We progressed over the course of the match. It’s always tough to win your first away game in the Champions League. [On Antoine Griezmann] He gets better every game. He’s a decisive player. He stepped up at the right moment; it was a huge performance from Griezmann.”
