TOP STORY: Will Man United sign a centre-back?

Man United have been linked with a clutch of high-profile centre-backs over the past few weeks and seem to have run into brick walls in their pursuit of them all thus far.

The latest name to be flung into the equation is that of Kurt Zouma, with The Sun claiming that a “desperate” Jose Mourinho may resort to raiding former club Chelsea — or, more precisely, their reserve team — to bolster his back line before the start of the Premier League season.

However, according to Simon Peach of the Press Association, United have since “poured cold water” over claims they have opened negotiations with the Blues over a permanent move for Zouma. In that case, the Frenchman, who spent last campaign at Stoke, could end up joining Everton on loan, says L’Equipe.

Harry Maguire still wants to move to Old Trafford, say Sky Sports, but Leicester are adamant they will not sell the centre-back to United, says the Mail. And Mourinho is concerned the club won’t sign anyone else before the deadline.

PAPER TALK

Arsenal weigh late move for Vida

Arsenal are considering a late move for Domagoj Vida after being told they would have to pay £26.9 million to sign the Besiktas defender, reports the Evening Standard.

The Gunners had been thinking of a cash-plus-player offer — with such a deal including Danny Welbeck or David Ospina, two players the club reportedly would consider parting with — but the Turkish club are thought to want a straight sale.

Liverpool is monitoring the situation as well, the paper says.

Wolves’ spree to pass £80m mark

As they continue to kit their squad out for the Premier League season, newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers look set to take their summer spending beyond the £80 million mark.

Having sealed a club-record £18m deal for Adama Traore on Wednesday, Wolves are now reportedly within spitting distance of tying up moves for Leander Dendoncker and Oleksandr Zinchenko of Anderlecht and Manchester City, respectively.

With Dendoncker set to cost around £12m, per the Guardian, and Zinchenko somewhere around £16m, according to ESPN FC sources, both players are penciled in for medicals at Molineux on Thursday.

The double splurge would follow the signings of Traore, experienced Portugal internationals Joao Moutinho and Rui Patrício, Jonny Castro Otto from Atletico Madrid and Benfica striker Raul Jimenez, who recently shored up a loan move to the West Midlands club.
