Toronto FC to face Tigres UANL in Campeones Cup

We now know the matchup for the inaugural Campeones Cup: Toronto FC vs. Tigres UANL.

The two teams will play at BMO Field on September 19 after Tigres defeated Santos Laguna 4-0 in the Campeon de Campeones on Sunday night at StubHub Center. The match pitted the winners of the 2017 Apertura (Tigres UANL) and 2018 Clausura (Santos Laguna) against each other.

Tigres opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Guido Pizarro, who returned to the Monterrey-based side this offseason after a season with Sevilla in Spain, headed one into the net off a corner kick. Three minutes later it was Javier Aquino’s turn, as the Mexican international headed one in off a Jurgen Damm cross. Lucas Zelarayan provided another in the 67th minute, finishing into an open net after Damm sped past the defense and set him up. Aquino turned provider in the 74th minute, assisting on an Andre-Pierre Gignac strike.

It will not be the first matchup of 2018 between the sides, as TFC and Tigres faced each other in the 2018 Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals. TFC prevailed, advancing thanks to away goals after the two matches finished 4-4. TFC won the first leg 2-1 at BMO, before holding on for the necessary result at Estadio Universitario after going up 2-1, eventually losing 3-2 but advancing to the semifinals.
