The Amakhosi defender speaks on their league title ambitions before a new sponsor takes over
Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso revealed they want to win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title before the league changes sponsor following the news Absa will cut dies with the division at the end of the current season.
The former Free State Stars centre-back added they also want to honour the chairman Kaizer Motaung as Amakhosi celebrate their 50th anniversary.
The Bafana Bafana defender has been a key figure for coach Ernst Middendorp’s men and explained he was shocked to discover that Orlando Pirates midfielder Ben Motshwari tested positive for the coronavirus.
“We had already made it clear that we want to win the league for our chairman [Kaizer Motaung] as a gift as the club celebrates 50 years of existence this season,” said Cardoso as quoted by Phakaaathi.
“We now also want to be the last club to win it while it is called the Absa Premiership as that sponsor is leaving.”
As the Soweto giants currently lead the PSL log with 48 points from 22 games – four more than Mamelodi Sundowns who have a game in hand – Cardoso spoke of the importance of curbing the pandemic.
“It is very important that we follow all the lockdown rules. Players are at an increased risk of infection because football is a contact sport. It is important to adhere to all safety measures,” added the 33-year-old.
“I was shocked to learn that Ben Motshwari had caught the virus. It told me that we are at risk of infection as players. We really need to work together so we can go back to the field.”
Meanwhile, the Absa recently announced they will part ways with the league’s governing body as title sponsor and media reports suggest that MTN, Nedbank, Standard Bank and Bidvest Bank are all interested in sponsoring the division.
Absa’s departure means an end to a partnership of 13 years and league chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza has received the backing of a number of legends such as John Tlale, who told Goal that the Buccaneers boss will find a new financial backer.
On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has cast doubts on whether the 2019/20 campaign will resume as PSL teams are yet to start training on the field after the games were suspended in March.
