Unai Emery targets Arsenal title challenge not planning overhaul

Stewart Robson details what makes Unai Emery the right choice for Arsenal and why the club would have been taking the easy route with Mikel Arteta.

The FC crew react to reports that Arsenal will replace Arsene Wenger with former PSG coach Unai Emery rather than Mikel Arteta.

New Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said he wants the club to fight for “every title” next season and does not believe the squad needs a major revamp.

Emery, who spent two years at Paris Saint-Germain before leaving at the end of the season, was confirmed as Arsene Wenger’s successor at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

“Our target is to develop. But how do you develop? I think that’s about battling for every title,” he said. “That’s something that is in Arsenal’s s history and it’s in my history as well, and I want that to continue.

“Our objective is to win titles and to be among the best teams in Europe. I also want to make the fans proud of the team. I know they already are, but I want them to continue to be.”

Emery said he wanted his side to continue the Arsenal tradition of playing possession-based football but press more when they did not have the ball.

“My ideal is to be the protagonist in all the matches,” he said. “We will play against all teams with this personality.

“I think the history here is one thing — they love playing with possession of the ball. I like this personality, I like being the protagonist with the ball. And when you don’t have possession of the ball, I want a very squad that is very, very intensive with the pressure.

“It’s very important for me to be protagonist with the ball and pressing when you don’t have the ball.”

Emery backed the squad to succeed, adding: “I believe in the players who are here. I think we can [develop] with these players, and the objective is to work hard together with these talented players.”
