TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Extension
Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday that left back Marcel de Jong has signed a contract extension through 2019, with an option for 2020.
The Canadian international is the third member of the ‘Caps backline to sign extensions, following captain and center back Kendall Waston and right back Jake Nerwinski.
“Since his first day with the club, Marcel has been the consummate professional,” Vancouver coach Carl Robinson said in a statement. “He’s a competitor, he sets the standard at training, and we’ve seen the results on the pitch. Marcel and his family have embraced Vancouver and this club and we are thrilled to have Marcel agree.”
The 31-year-old has started 22 of the 28 regular season matches he’s appeared in for the ‘Caps with one assist and also started all three of their 2017 MLS Cup playoff matches. This season, the native of Newmarket, Ontario has eight starts in 11 matches and leads the team with 18 interceptions and is third with 13 tackles won.
“I am thankful to Whitecaps FC for their continued support and belief in me,” de Jong said in a release. “Vancouver is home for my family and I will keep doing everything in my power for this amazing club and city. Also, a special thanks to our amazing fans, your support means the world to us.”
