Oburu & Makwatta score as AFC Leopards compound Kisumu All-Stars woes

Ingwe managed to collect six points from struggling Otenga after emerging with a smooth win

AFC Leopards defeated Kisumu All-Stars 2-0 in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) tie to collect six points of the season from them.

Vincent Oburu and John Makwatta scored for AFC Leopards at Moi Stadium to enable them to do a double over their opponents.

Oburu opened the score for the visitors in the 26th minute after Kisumu All-Stars had remained firm at the back for the better part of the first 20 minutes.

Ingwe won a penalty in the 27th minute and had the opportunity to stretch the lead, and Makwatta rose to take it but failed to find the back of the net as his shot was saved by Geoffrey Were.

The officials had to stop the match in the 47th minute to allow AFC Leopards’ defender Collins Shichenje receive medical attention after a heavy collision with an opponent.

The former Green Commandoes star returned to the pitch and continued with proceedings as AFC Leopards looked stronger once more.

Marvin Nabwire could have added the second goal in the 53rd minute but his effort was deflected off the target after beating two of his markers inside the penalty area.

Head coach Anthony Kimani had to introduce midfielder Eugene Mukangula in the 72nd minute in order to help deal with Kisumu All-Stars resurgence and insistent attacks. Mukangula took the place of striker Jaffery Owiti.

Makwatta scored the second goal for AFC Leopards, and his 13th overall in KPL, in the 74th minute. The former Ulinzi Stars and Buildcon forward headed the ball into the net as he rose high enough to connect with a good cross from full-back Isaac Kipyegon.

AFC Leopards won a second penalty in the 82nd minute after Austin Odhiambo was brought down inside the area. Makwatta took it but was unlucky once more as he blasted his effort wide.

Otenga could have halved the deficit in the 86th minute but a goalline clearance by Kipyegon denied them and helped AFC Leopards keep a clean sheet.

The clean sheet at Kisumu was Benjamin Ochan’s 11th since joining Ingwe.

Ingwe have now moved to the sixth position with 31 points after 18 matches while Kisumu All-Stars will continue gracing the relegation zone.

They have eight points from two wins and two draws and will face Kariobangi Sharks on February 2 while AFC Leopards will entertain Ulinzi Stars a day later.
