PSG’s Angel Di Maria open to exit this summer as club adds new players

Gab Marcotti and the FC crew discuss Unai Emery’s imminent departure from PSG and whether or not he could be successful in the Premier League.
Unai Emery has announced on Friday he is leaving his job as Paris Saint-Germain manager at the end of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Angel Di Maria told France Football he is unsure about his future with the club past the end of this season.

The Argentina international has featured regularly across all competitions, scoring 11 goals and adding six assists in 27 Ligue 1 appearances, but has regularly been linked with a move away — notably to Barcelona.

Di Maria, 30, said he could follow coach Unai Emery out of Parc des Princes this summer if the club decide to sell him in order to buy others.

“Football is a strange game,” Di Maria said. “I am happy here, but the club needs to sign new players and to do this, others must be sold. It is not my decision. It is also the club’s. For the moment, I am calm.”

Di Maria was an unused substitute during the first leg of PSG’s Champions League round-of-16 exit against Real Madrid but started the second and was unable to inspire a comeback.

He does not feel that PSG lack anything in particular, but more that it will take time for their continental dreams to come true.

“We must simply continue to work hard,” Di Maria said. “The club and the supporters need to stay patient.

Paris Saint-Germain's Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria is open to the idea of leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

“The most important thing is to continue to sign great players who want to win things or have already won things and are experienced — the rest will come on its own.”

Di Maria has seen things change at PSG since Neymar’s arrival from Barcelona last summer, and he believes that his Brazil teammate has had a significant and positive impact on Ligue 1.

“Neymar has enabled Le Championnat to suddenly grow, not only in a footballing sense but also in terms of exposure and marketing,” Di Maria said.

Di Maria and PSG can add the Coupe de France to the Ligue 1 and Coupe de la Ligue titles if they beat semi-professional club Les Herbiers in the final on Tuesday.
