Portu was delighted helping Girona secure Champions League qualification with victory over Barcelona.
With Girona 1-2 down, he entered the field on 64 minutes. Just a few seconds later, he scored the equaliser for Míchel’s team in the 65th minute. Then, in the 67th minute he assisted Miguel to make it 3-2 and in the 75th minute he sealed his great game with a spectacular volleyed goal from outside the area.
Afterwards, Portu said: “I had a thorn in my side with this club. My last year here I experienced the other side of the coin which is relegation. I felt like one of the most responsible, because I always played, I didn’t give my best that year.
“I loved this club and we went down. I have always had that thorn in me and today I can get it out. It is incredible to experience this. To see that all these people are going to enjoy the Champions League… It was something that could not have been thought of before.
“There is nothing more beautiful than writing your name in the history of a club that you love. The word that defines this team, this club and now the city is family. It has been shown that, even if you are small, you can fight against the greatest.”
