Barcelona great Pique jumps to Xavi defence; mocks Real Madrid

Barcelona great Gerard Pique insists coach Xavi remains the best man for the job.

Xavi is under pressure after defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk has left Barca in danger of missing the Champions League round of 16.

Pique told RAC1: “There is no one better than Xavi to turn it around and play well again.

“As long as there are solutions, you have to be patient because Xavi knows the house better than anyone, since he was a child.

“If I’ve talked to him since I left? No. Okay, yes. He called me for the League celebration, but I didn’t see myself there.”

The 36-year-old continued: “We already know that in Barça we need to win and play well, but when a couple of games come in where the feelings are not good, the nerves and the critics begin. It is our daily bread in this club, it is the level of demand that is already good for us, but those who are already there know it.

“In Madrid they would be delighted with the 0-1 of Anoeta in the 92nd minute, but here we don’t think it’s good for the game and that’s extra pressure for the coach and the players.”

Piqué added, “The mix of young and veteran players is positive and it already worked for us, but you have to be patient.”
