Valencia cult hero Vicente Guillot has warned Marco Asensio against pushing to leave Real Madrid.
Spain international Asensio is off contract at the end of the season and is weighing up his options. The winger has been linked with clubs across Europe, including eternal rivalsBarcelona.
But while Guillot can understand Asensio’s playing frustrations, he warns the attacker that the grass isn’t always greener away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
The former Los Che star told Tribalfootball.com: “Real Madrid has always had great players and Asensio is also a great player. However, if Asensio goes to play for a lesser team it could be that he will not get the support on the pitch he gets at Real Madrid from the top class players around him. When a club has a great team (‘un grande’) …it is because they have players who are ‘grandes.’
“The great players also make the players around them greater too. Look at Messi when he was at FC Barcelona. He was surrounded by a host of superb players like Iniesta. Therefore, Asensio is in a team with players that can help him a lot, even though he is not getting so many games.”
One of the great entertainers of his generation, Guillot played over 150 games for Valencia, where his popularity generated a fans’ club, known as the ‘Guillotistas’. A diminutive winger boasting great pace and dribbling ability, Guillot was at the forefront of a golden age for Los Che.
The 81 year-old admits he has great admiration for fellow Spanish winger Asensio and urges the 26 year-old and his advisers to choose wisely should he decide to leave Real Madrid.
Guillot added, “He’s doing very well in the Spanish national side. If he did leave Real Madrid, it would have to be for another great side. I like Asensio as a player because he’s ‘listo’ (clever, cunning, and fast), he knows how to find spaces and he understands football.”
