Frenkie de Jong says he’s happy at Barcelona – despite admitting problems with directors.
Despite fresh rumours of a new attempt in January from Manchester United, De Jong says he wants to stay with Barca – particularly with his contract issues now settled.
He told De Telegraaf: “It was a special construction when I extended my contract in the covid period (in October 2020).
“So then you postpone money and get it back later. But that has been arranged. I think the club is now on the rise again, has taken the upward trend. There are young players with potential and the team is a lot better. And I am very happy in Barcelona.
“When I play it is top and in terms of living it is perfect.”
De Jong also said: “At one point, a newspaper published things from my contract.
“I didn’t leak it and there was only one other party who had the contract. So that had to come from the club. Then you think: this is not necessary. And suddenly there was a letter asking whether my contract was valid, because the previous chairman (Josep Maria) Bartomeu should no longer have concluded it.
“I was annoyed that the club did it, but it didn’t affect me. I didn’t feel like the trainer was against me. In the media, he said he was happy with me playing football, but Barcelona also has an economic side.
“I think it was difficult for him to speak out about that.”
