Barcelona coach Xavi happy to take Getafe point: It’s been a big comeback

Barcelona coach Xavi admits summer market planning is underway after their 0-0 draw with Getafe.

The goalless stalemate at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez was mission accomplished in one sense for the Blaugrana, but also a reminder of how different they want next season to be.

“We always want to win, but the draw was virtually good enough,” Xavi said in his post-game press conference.

“We met a minimum demand at Barcelona, which is to play in the Supercopa de Espana.

“Now we can look at what we’ve done since taking over the team. We’ve made a big comeback.

“I dreamed of winning a trophy, but we didn’t manage that.

“We’re second and we haven’t been able to compete with Real Madrid.

“We didn’t compete in the Copa del Rey either, or the Supercopa de Espana.

“Now it’s about working on next season… although we also want to show we can beat Villarreal.”

The draw ultimately suited both teams, with Getafe securing their LaLiga Santander survival, but Xavi insisted both sides wanted to win.

“We went out to win, so did Getafe,” he said.

“In the second half they didn’t press us so much and we didn’t attack like usual.

“But, you see the result is favourable for you… it’s a reality. But, from there, to talking about anything untoward, no, not at all.”

With attentions turning to next season, there has been much talk of comings and goings at the Camp Nou but Xavi was giving nothing away, not about Riqui Puig, Ousmane Dembele or anyone else.

“This week we’ll do some planning,” he said.

“I’m clear on what we need to compete: the board knows it, Mateu [Alemany] and Jordi [Cruyff] know it… we’ll prioritise.

“Next year we need to compete for titles. We’ll discuss all the names.”
