Barcelona vice-president Romeu: We could not afford Messi contract

Barcelona‘s economic vice-president Eduard Romeu insists they could not afford to renew the contract of Lionel Messi.

The Argentine dramatically left Barca this summer for PSG.

Romeu told Sport: “It was an operation that we could not afford as a club, it did not fit into the economic structure.

“The HVAC contract? Yes, but it was a poisoned gift that we recommended not to accept from the business sector.

“It was putting the institution in danger and the president (Joan Laporta) said no one could be above the club. He made the right decision.”
