Barcelona draw Bayern Munich, Benfica in Champions League group

Barcelona have been placed in Group E of this year’s Champions League group stage, being drawn against German champions Bayern Munich, Portuguese side Benfica and Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev.

Rafa Yuste and Jordi Cruyff represented FC Barcelona at the afternoon’s draw in Istanbul, Turkey.

Bayern will be the most difficult opponent – particularly with Barça going through something of a transition period. They will have bad memories of the last time they played against Bayern Munich, having been hammered 8-2 in the 2019-20 Champions League.

Benfica, who qualified for the knockout round after beating PSV Eindhoven on penalties earlier this week, will host Barcelona at the Estadio da Luz, where the aforementioned match between Barça and Bayern was played. Dynamo Kiev are the other team in the group.

The four sides will battle to finish in the ‘top two’ to secure qualification to the knock-out rounds.
