Messi accepts pay-cut; LaLiga approves – Barcelona to announce new contract

Lionel Messi has accepted a major pay-cut to re-sign with Barcelona.

The Argentina captain, reports L’Esportiu, is set to sign his new contract this week.

Barca president Joan Laporta and LaLiga counterpart Javier Tebas have reached an agreement where Messi’s new deal will fall under the club’s salary cap. As such Messi will be registered by LaLiga for the new season.

The deal will run to 2026 and be worth a base salary of €20m. The agreement will also see Messi be paid as a Barca ambassador in the US once his deal expires. The Argentine has purchased two properties in Miami in preparation of moving his family to the USA post retirement.

Messi’s new contract will also carry a €600m buyout clause.
