What is FIFA 21 Team of the Year?

Team of the Year (TOTY) is an annual event in FIFA, celebrating the best players from the last 12 months.

The 11 players chosen for the team receive massive upgrade boosts in the game, with some players even rated 99 in TOTY.

In the past, the Team of the Year was connected to the FIFPro World XI, but since that award has moved to December to tie in with FIFA’s The Best awards, the in-game equivalent has become a standalone team.

In recent years, the final team has been voted by fans of the game from a longlist of players selected by EA Sports.

This is the case again for FIFA 21, with fans choosing from four categories (GK, DEF, MID, FWD) to create a team using the 4-3-3 formation.

When is the FIFA 21 Team of the Year released?

The FIFA 21 Team of the Year was announced on January 22.

For the last two years, the TOTY event began in early January, but was not released until January 15 in FIFA 18.

This year, FIFA 21 was released later than usual and TOTY has been pushed back from January 8, with the Headliners promotion running for two weeks from January 1 to 14.

The final TOTY XI is released in batches during the week, before the entire squad will be available from Wednesday to Friday.

Players are only available in packs and can be bought and sold on the transfer market.

Which players are in the FIFA 21 Team of the Year?

The FIFA 21 Team of the Year is separate to the FIFPro World XI, but the majority of the players are the same as they are widely considered as the best performers over the past year.

Manuel Neuer was named in the FIFA 21 Team of the Year, while the likes of Real Madrid‘s Sergio Ramos, Manchester City‘s Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester United‘s Bruno Fernandes were also selected.

Cristiano Ronaldo is included in the FIFA 21 TOTY, but as a Piemonte Calcio player due to the fact that the official Juventus name, jersey and badge are not licensed in FIFA 21.

Lionel Messi did not make the final team, with fans instead opting for Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe.

This offers greater variety when voting, as players such as Marseille defender Jordan Amavi and Eintracht Frankfurt forward Andre Silva have been nominated but are unlikely to make the final XI.

How do I vote for Team of the Year?

Voting for Team of the Year opened on January 7 and ran until January 18.

Choosing your FIFA 21 Team of the Year is easy, just go to the TOTY page on the EA Sports website and drag the players from the bottom of the screen into the correct position on the formation graphic.

Once you have chosen which 11 players you think were the best performers in the past 12 months, click to accept the terms and conditions and then click on Submit Vote.

If you make a mistake, you can just drag a new player to the same position on the formation to change your selection before submitting it.

What players are available in Objectives and Squad Building Challenges?

Each promotion so far this season has had a special Objective player, but it is unlikely that TOTY will have a player available through Objectives.

Instead, it is likely that a special Team of the Year kit will be available through in-game Objectives, with special packs likely to be given as rewards.

There is usually a vote for a 12th man in the TOTY squad, with users able to vote for their favourite player who missed out on the final TOTY XI.

It is predicted that Neymar or Kylian Mbappe will prove most popular and be named as the TOTY 12th man for FIFA 21.

Additionally, during the Team of the Year event, TOTY Moments players will also be released in Squad Building Challenges (SBCs) and feature legendary players who were chosen in past TOTYs.

Will Headliners and OTW cards upgrade during TOTY?

Ones to Watch (OTW) and Headliners cards are dynamic versions of players which receive upgrades throughout the season when special cards are released.

These OTW and Headliners receive upgrades when “performance-based in-form” versions of their card are released. This includes Team of the Week (TOTW), Man of the Match (MOTM), Hero and Team of the Tournament items.

However, EA Sports confirmed that Headliners and OTW cards are not upgraded for Player of the Month (POTM), Team of the Season or Team of the Year.

That means that if Bruno Fernandes is chosen in the TOTY, his Headliner card will not automatically upgrade to match his new TOTY edition.
