Samatta’s goal sends Fenerbahce into Turkish Cup quarter-finals

The Tanzania star scored the only goal that gave the hosts victory at the Ulker Stadium on Thursday evening

Mbwana Samatta has sent Fenerbahce into the Turkish Cup quarter-finals after he scored the only goal in their 1-0 win over Kasimpasa.

Samatta separated both teams with his 51st-minute strike which ended his nine-game goal drought for the Yellow Canaries, since he bagged a brace against Fatih Karagumruk in a league fixture back in October.

The Tanzania striker was later replaced in the 69th minute while Senegal‘s Papiss Cisse played the entire duration and his compatriot Mame Thiam was introduced as a 46th-minute substitute.

Thursday’s effort stretched Samatta’s tally to three goals after 12 appearances in all competitions since he moved to Turkey on a season-long loan from Aston Villa in September.

Despite being a man down on the stroke of full-time, Fenerbahce held on to victory and they join their Super Lig rivals Istanbul Basaksehir, Besiktas, Alanyasopor, Sivasspor, Konyaspor and Antalyaspor in the quarter-final stage.

The Yellow Canaries are now on a five-game winning streak in all competitions and Samatta will be aiming to help them continue the fine form when they host Ankaragucu for their next league fixture on Monday.

Fenerbahce are second in the Super Lig standings, level on 35 points with leaders Besiktas after 17 matches.
