Former FC Twente chief Jan van Halst says Frenkie de Jong should’ve stepped up for Barcelona‘s penalty last night.
Martin Braithwaite missed from the spot during the 1-1 draw with Eibar.
Van Halste said on Ziggo Sport: “You have guys with better kicking technique, let’s put it this way.
“He is doing well, as a striker. But you have Miralem Pjanic, Frenkie de Jong, Antoine Griezmann, although he has also been a bit unfortunate in missing penalties this season.”
Van Halste continued: “You know what I also miss a bit: I don’t see Frenkie de Jong saying: ‘No bull***t, I’ll just take that penalty’. Just now, today, I sometimes have the idea with Frenkie de Jong: so neat … If he should be a central defender, then he should go be a central defender. Then I would have said, ‘Penalty? I’ll take it’. Then you also take a step higher on that ladder.
“He can play football so well…
“As a personality you could also start by claiming a penalty. ‘I was here for eighty million, I take the responsibility. Out of the way, I’m going to do it now’. I also think he should claim that. You can say, ‘It’s not in his character’. But that is part of being a top European player that you strive for.”
