Tusker FC 1-0 Vihiga United: Brewers go second after third straight win

The visitors finished the game with a player less after Absalom Onyango was dismissed late into the game

Tusker FC have moved second on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League table after labouring to a 1-0 win over Vihiga United on Sunday.

The hosts scored their goal in the second half courtesy of midfielder Jackson Macharia.

It was the visitors who started the game on a high aiming at getting an early goal. They created chances but failed to capitalize them as the Brewers struggled to settle.

Things got worse for the 11-time champions when Robert Mboya was forced out with an injury in the 27th minute with Emery Mvuyekure taking his position in goal. It was a bad ending for the former Mathare United custodian who had commanded his area well.

In the 30th minute, the substitute had to be at his best to deny Norman Werunga who had capitalized on the defensive lapses at the back.

The best chance for the Robert Matano-led charges came in the 40th minute when David Majak managed to get past his markers before setting up Macharia but the goalkeeper did enough to stop the latter from getting the opening goal.

After the break, Matano brought in Humphrey Mieno and Luke Namanda for Apollo Otieno and George Odhiambo respectively. It was a tactical move that was meant to ensure the Brewers stamped their authority on the game.

Boniface Muchiri tried to set-up Hashim Sempala in the 56th minute but the Ugandan’s shot was deflected out for an unfruitful corner.

Five minutes later, the hosts made amends for their poor start. Muchiri managed to bring in a good cross from the left and Luke Namanda set up Macharia for a tap-in.

Bright Star striker David Majak could have doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute but the goalkeeper parried the ball out.

Moments later, it was Emery’s turn to ensure his team does not concede. Dennis Wafula was let loose in a good area and managed to spot the goalkeeper’s position. However, the latter managed to stop the ball from finding the back of the net.

With 10 minutes to go, Macharia had a good chance to score from about 16 yards but he shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Absalom Onyango was sent off later on for a second bookable offense and Vihiga had no option but to finish the game with 10 players.

It was a third straight win for the Brewers who are now on 10 points after five games.
