Duren could become only the third side in history to beat Bayern in the first round of this competition. The Bundesliga champions only first round defeats to date came against TSV Vestenbergsgreuth and TSG Weinheim in 1994/95 and 1990/91 respectively.
As expected, boss Hansi Flick has heavily rotated his squad due to the international break but his side’s starting XI tonight is still notably very strong. The experienced trio of Boateng, Muller and Martinez start whilst the exciting Davies take his place at left-back. Costa makes his first start for Bayern in two years after returning on loan from Juventus a few weeks ago. There’s DFB-Pokal debuts for newcomers Sarr and Roca and also for 17-year-old former Chelsea attacker Musiala.

Duren have had to wait for their encounter with the champions of Europe as this tie was originally scheduled to take place during mid-September along with the other first round fixtures. It’s also the home sides debut in the DFB-Pokal, having only been founded as a club in late 2017. Despite being the home side though, tonight’s clash will be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich with Duren foregoing their right to host the tie at their Westkampfbahn.
Fifth-tier side 1. FC Duren will be hoping to shock the reigning German champions tonight and place their name in DFB-Pokal history. Hansi Flick’s Bayern on the other hand will be looking to progress past the first round and defend their German cup title after winning the competition last season.
