Stephens: Stellenbosch FC sign former Cape Town City goalkeeper

The nomadic shot-stopper has found a new home ahead of the upcoming campaign is expected to start next month

Stellenbosch FC have announced the signing of former Cape Town City goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

The 29-year-old was a free agent having recently parted ways with City at the end of the 2019/20 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.

Stellies released the following statement on Saturday afternoon as they reinforced their goalkeeping department.

“Stellenbosch FC welcomes its latest acquisition, Sage Stephens transferring from rivals CapeTown City FC.”

“The Stellies family welcomes you to your new home. Sage Stephens is proudly Stellenbosch,” a club statement read.

Stephens is Stellies’ second signing this week with the club having confirmed the arrival of former Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Macheke on Friday.

Macheke joined the Western Cape-based side after leaving Bidvest Wits with the club’s PSL status having been sold to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

Stellenbosch are Stephens’ fourth professional club as he started his career at Moroka Swallows in 2009.

A move to AmaZulu FC came in 2015 after Swallows were relegated from the elite league to the National First Division (NFD).

Stephens enjoyed regular game time at AmaZulu, who were campaigning in the NFD at the time. 

His exploits caught the eye of Cape Town City and he was snapped up by the Citizens in 2017.

The Cape Town-born shot-stopper was City’s first-choice keeper in his first season with the club as the team finished as runners-up in the 2017 MTN8.

However, Stephens fell out of favour following the arrival of towering Dutch keeper Peter Leeuwenburgh at City.

He made only seven appearances in the league for City in the 2019/20 season and he has since moved to Stellenbosch where he will compete with Lee Langeveldt and Keegan Pool.
