‘What do I like about Fernandes? Everything!’ – Scholes says Man Utd are now ‘very watchable’ thanks to Portuguese star

A former Old Trafford favourite heaped praise upon the Portuguese playmaker after his superb display in the Europa League

Bruno Fernandes has been described as “sensational” by Paul Scholes, who insists the Manchester United midfielder has “brought this team to life” over the last month.

Fernandes notched his second goal in United colours on Thursday night, opening the scoring from the penalty spot in a 5-0 win over Club Brugge at Old Trafford.

Odion Ighalo found the net for the first time since joining the club on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January and Scott McTominay also got his name on the scoresheet on his return from injury, before Fred hit a late brace to add extra gloss to the victory.

The Red Devils progressed to the last 16 of the competition 6-1 on aggregate, and increased their recent unbeaten run across all competitions to six matches.

Fernandes continues to justify the €55 million (£47m/$61m) United shelled out for his services last month, as he pulled the strings in the middle of the park once again and pushed the team forward at every possible opportunity.

Scholes is hopeful the Portugal international can maintain the same level of perfomances between now and May, insisting he has already transformed United back into a “very watchable” side.

“It was a perfect night and there were a lot of very good performances. Fernandes stood out and he controlled the pace of play,” the Red Devils legend told BT Sport.

“He looks like he has brought this team to life. He has made a team that did not look that watchable at times look exciting and very watchable right now.

“When you bring in a player like Fernandes it livens everyone up. Usually a player from a different country takes more time. Hopefully, he stays in this form for the rest of the season.

“What do I like about Bruno? Everything so far. Creativity. His awareness on the pitch. Before the ball comes to him he knows what’s around him. He’s sensational — you just wonder why nobody else came in for him or why we didn’t get him in the summer.”

Scholes went on to compare Fernandes to Manchester City talisman Kevin de Bruyne, adding: “When I think of him the only other player I can think of is Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City.

“He is the best player in the Premier League but Fernandes is right up there.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will now look ahead to a crucial Premier League meeting with Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, which they must win to keep the pressure on fourth placed Chelsea in the race for the final Champions League spot.
