Mestre hints style was key to Valverde Barcelona sacking

Former Barcelona vice-president Jordi Mestre believes Ernesto Valverde lost his job last month over the style of football he employed.

Valverde was controversially sacked and replaced over the New Year by Quique Setien.

Mestre told Mundo Deportivo: “The change of coach at Barça? To give your opinion, you have to know the situation well and have all the ins and outs. Normally, a coach is not replaced in mid-season when he is first (in the championship) and qualified for the round of 16 by being leader (of his group in the Champions League).

“I agree that we lack, perhaps, a very attractive game dynamic, but not the result.

“Why is it so difficult to occupy the Barça bench? It’s not easy to train Barça. You have to win everything, develop beautiful play and win 5-0 in each game. The other teams are studying us and playing very well. And things don’t always go as we all expect.

“The level of pressure and demands are incredible. You have to give time and be patient. I remember Johan Cruyff who was beaten at Camp Nou when he started and then look: the Dream Team!”
