Bidvest Wits 3-2 Bloemfontein Celtic: Students pass Phunya Sele Sele test

The Clever Boys netted two late goals to steal the game under the nose of Siwelele and keep their slim title hopes alive

Bidvest Wits recorded a 3-2 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in a PSL match which was played at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday.

Phathutshedzo Nange opened the scoring with a stunning goal but Phunya Sele Sele netted twp second-half goals through Menzi Masuku and Andile Fikizolo

However, Haashim Domingo and Gift Motupa struck in quick succession to steal under the nose of Phunya Sele Sele.

The Clever Boys needed the points more than Celtic as they wanted to keep up with their fellow title-chasers, and they started brightly as Nange fired them ahead in the 13th minute.

Elias Pelembe was instrumental in the build-up to the goal as he forced his way into the Celtic box before finding the former Black Leopards.

This was a dream start for Gavin Hunt and his team but they needed an insurance goal to kill the game off.

Celtic showed some sense of urgency midway through the half but what’s impressive was how they never let the goal keep them down.

Wits tried hard to double their lead towards the end of the first half but Celtic stood firm to keep the scoreline at 1-0 going into the break.

The visitors started the second half rejuvenated as Masuku drew his side level seven minutes after the restart.

Masuku’s strike appeared to demoralise the Wits players a bit and Hunt’s team often looked disjointed in the middle of the park.

But for Celtic, this was a morale-booster as they took the game to Wits and showed no respect to them with Masuku, Fikizolo and Ndumiso Mabena pulling all the right strings.

Fikizolo made it 2-1 to Celtic after some sloppy defending from Wits. A ball was played into the box and found Fikizolo unmarked inside the small box, and the former Golden Arrows attacker made no mistake in the 77th minute.

Then moments of madness came four minutes later as Domingo made it 2-2 on the night with a clinical finish.

As everyone thought both sides would settle for a share of the spoils, Motupa showed up and came up with the winner in the 85th minute.

Ultimately, the Students walked away with all the points and kept their slim title hopes alive as they moved to 30 points after 14 league games while Celtic dropped to sixth and below Orlando Pirates, who moved up to fifth following their 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns.
