Wazito FC 4-3 Sony Sugar: Rupia hat-trick sinks Sugar Millers

The win means the newcomers have picked their second victory of the season, an important result after changes to the technical team

Wazito FC have defeated Sony Sugar 4-3 in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match on Saturday at Kenyatta Stadium.

Sony Sugar managed to honour the match and thus avoided relegation after dishing out two walkovers, to AFC Leopards and Tusker FC.

A hat-trick from Elvis Rupia and one from Derrick Otanga was enough for Wazito’s victory while Sony Sugar got their goals from Kevin Omundi’s brace and an own goal from Johnstone Omurwa.

Shaban Odhoji turned into an instant hero for Sony Sugar as he managed to deny Wazito FC three chances inside the opening minute.

Rupia was the first person denied by the goalkeeper before subsequent shots by Victor Ndinya and Safi Mansoor were kept at bay as Sony struggled to clear their lines following the hosts’ incessant attacks.

The former Gor Mahia goalkeeper denied Ndinya again in the 18th minute as the winger attempted to slot past him from close range.

Sony took a surprising lead at the half-hour mark when Omundi headed past Kevin Omondi in Wazito’s goal. Omundi was left unmarked and his free-header gave the Sugar Millers a rather deserved lead as Wazito’s dominance and attacks fizzled.

Rupia was not to be denied in the 33rd minute when he equalized for Wazito from close range. The former Nzoia Sugar and Power Dynamos striker got his morning brace in the 38th minute to hand Wazito the lead.

Musa Masika who was returning to the starting line up picked Rupia and the forward made no mistake to score the third goal of the match.

Sony Sugar drew level in the 52nd minute when Johnstone Omurwa deflected the ball into his net. Sony won a free-kick just outside the box and Salmon Omollo sent a low drive which Omurwa was unable to clear in the process.

Rupia got his hat-trick in the 62nd minute from the spot-kick. He was brought down by Humphrey Okoti and did not err from the penalty spot as he planted the ball into the top corner.

It is the first hat-trick this season in KPL. Omundi got his brace of the day in the 68th minute as he equalized for hard-fighting Sony Sugar.

Sony’s Bonaventure Atse was red-carded in the 88th minute after an altercation with the centre-referee.
