2018-19 UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season: Defenders – Andy Robertson

The Scotland international played a vital role for Liverpool in their run to a sixth European title…

Title-winning campaigns are usually built on the back of a formidable defence and that was very much the case for Liverpool in their march to the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League trophy in May this year.

The Reds’ superb attack was bolstered by a fine defence that was marshalled by Dutch stalwart Virgil Van Dijk but the contributions from the entire back-four and goalkeeper Alisson Becker were immense throughout the campaign.

Much of the Merseyside club’s success last season was down to their pair of attacking fullbacks with both Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold playing significant roles in the setup.

Robertson was an ever-present figure in the Liverpool defence in both the Champions League and the Premier League. The Scottish left-back had shown plenty of promising signs since making his move to Liverpool in January, 2018 but it was in the 2018-19 campaign where he really came into his own for the club.

The 25-year-old was a lively figure for Liverpool with a tireless engine that saw him marauding up and down the left flank with some aplomb. Robertson’s sweet left foot provided a total of 13 assists over the course of last season with two of them coming in the Champions League title winning campaign.

The full back made a total of 12 appearances for Liverpool in Europe with his assists coming in important wins over Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade.

Signing Robertson from Hull City has turned out to be masterstroke for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp and the Scotland international has been deservedly named in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season.
