Australian striker Adam Taggart is staking his claim to be the Socceroos number nine, with another two goals for Suwon Bluewings putting him top of the K-League scoring charts.
The 26-year-old scored the opening goal in the sixth minute before securing the all-important third in a 3-2 victory on the road against Incheon United on Wednesday evening.
Taggart now has 10 goals in 17 league matches for Suwon, with five in his last five games, as he become the division’s top scorer ahead of Jeonbuk’s Shin-uk Kim and FC Seoul’s Aleksandar Pesic (both nine goals).
The former Roar hitman continued his hot form from his previous match versus Jeju United, starting his rampage against Incheon with a clever run to the front post to prod the ball past the approaching goalkeeper.
He then doubled his tally soon after the second half resumed, taking advantage of a defensive mistake to fire a low volley into the bottom corner.
Taggart joined the K-League side in February after deciding to leave A-League club Brisbane Roar in the aftermath of John Aloisi’s resignation.
He struck 11 goals in 18 games for the Roar before departing, to go with the eight in 14 he chalked up at home-town club Perth Glory the season before.
Socceroos coach Graham Arnold recently used Taggart as a substitute in the June friendly against South Korea, which was his first green and gold appearance since the 2014 World Cup.
Following his two appearances in the Brazil-based tournament, Taggart earned a move to Fulham but never played a senior match for the club because of injury struggles.
