Lille strong in second after seeing off Guingamp

LOSC maintained their grip on second place in the Ligue 1 Conforama table with a 2-0 win away at bottom club EA Guingamp on Sunday.

EA Guingamp  0 – 2  LOSC

THE MATCH

This was a potentially awkward fixture for Lille, who were missing centre-back and captain Adama Soumaoro due to suspension following his sending-off in the Coupe de France defeat at Stade Rennais FC in midweek. Nevertheless, Christophe Galtier’s side overcame that to get the better of Ligue 1 Conforama’s bottom team thanks to two second-half goals at the Stade du Roudourou.

Portuguese prodigy Rafael Leão hit the post for the visitors in the first half, and then had another effort turned around the post by Marc-Aurèle Caillard, but it was he who got the breakthrough just after half-time. Jonathan Ikoné’s low ball in from the right was behind Leão, but the forward stretched to hit a first-time shot into the net (47′).

Guingamp thought they were back on level terms just after the hour mark when Marcus Thuram turned the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.

Substitute Nolan Roux – the former Lille striker – then saw a header tipped onto the bar by Mike Maignan late on, and Lille went on to wrap up the points deep in injury time. Loïc Rémy was brought down in the box and got up to convert the resulting penalty (90+4′) as Lille stay clear of Olympique Lyonnais in second place.

THE PLAYER: Rafael Leão

Once called the ‘Portuguese Mbappé’, this young forward is looking more and more impressive as the weeks go by. The 19-year-old got the crucial opener for Lille here and now has six goals in his last seven Ligue 1 Conforama appearances.

THE STAT: 6

Guingamp are now six points from outright safety. They have lost their last three league games by a combined score of 12-0.
