Man United U18s through to semifinals as Greenwood downs Liverpool

Craig Burley says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is starting to make the case to be Manchester United’s permanent manager after beating Tottenham and Arsenal.

Manchester United’s under-18s came back from 2-0 down to beat Liverpool 3-2 in extra time and book their place in the Premier League Cup semifinals.

Mason Greenwood scored twice — both free-kicks — to inspire United’s fight-back after Liverpool had been reduced to 10 men.

Liverpool went ahead in the first half thanks to Paul Glatzel’s goal before Bobby Duncan doubled their advantage shortly after the break. But Morgan Boyes’ dismissal just before the hour changed the game and United forced extra time with goals from Greenwood and Teden Mengi.

It was left to Greenwood, who was named on the bench for the first team for the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Valencia in December, to score his second free-kick in the first period of extra time to send United through.
