Report: San Jose Earthquakes acquiring Peruvian defender Marcos Lopez

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

With new San Jose Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda in place, the club’s offseason strategy of adding South American talent looks set to continue.

Sporting Cristal announced on Friday they have transferred defender Marcos Lopez to the Earthquakes. The 19-year-old left back has been with the Peruvian powerhouse Sporting since 2017, winning the domestic league title last year, where he also chipped in with five goals in 23 appearances.

The youngster made his professional debut with San Martin de Porres in 2016, and played for Peru in the 2017 South American U-20 Championship before receiving his first senior team call-up in August 2018.

The Earthquakes currently have a deep corps of defenders but with Almeyda taking over this season after a poor 2018 campaign, there are likely to be changes made and reinforcements brought in before the team kicks off the 2019 MLS regular season on March 2 against the Montreal Impact.
