“Winning The UEFA Cup With Inter In 1998 Was Perfect”

Ivan Zamorano has recalled his backheel goal against Napoli back in the 1997/98 season as part of an interview ahead of tonight’s clash between Inter and Napoli at San Siro.

“It was a beautiful cross by Checco [Francesco Moriero] who spotted by run to the front post. The ball was a little behind me though and then, in a fraction of a second and instinctively, I went with my heel. It was unforgettable and one of the best goals of my career,” the Chilean said in an interview with the official Inter matchday programme.

Zamorano, who famously wore 1+8 on his jersey for a while at the club, then recalled perhaps his most important goal, the opening goal in the 1998 UEFA Cup final.

“The defeat in the final the year before against Schalke had been very painful for us and for all the fans. We had a second chance and we could not fail. I do not forget anything about that evening. My goal at the beginning, Zanetti’s goal and then Il Fenomeno’s [Ronaldo] goal. It was a perfect night. People today still remember everything with an incredible passion.”

He concluded the interview by discussing which player he sees himself most in from Inter’s current crop of players.

“It is always difficult to compare a player from the past with a current one as there are always differences. However, at Inter there is a player who has the same determination and desire to play and that is the captain of Inter, Mauro Icardi.”
