Hajduk stalwart Poklepović dies aged 80

Four-time Hajduk Split coach Stanko Poklepović died on Monday at the age of 80.

One of the most famous coaches in Croatia, he took charge of Hajduk in four spells from 1984 to 2015, notably leading the club to the 1985/86 UEFA Cup quarter-finals and into the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage. He was also in charge of the Croatian national team from 1992-93.

“He was my first coach when I came to Hajduk Split from Livno,” sais current Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić. “My first serious football knowledge I got from him. He was a well of knowledge and always ready with advice and suggestions.”

Poklepović’s 46-year coaching career took in spells with 12 clubs and two national teams (Iran as well as Croatia), including spells elsewhere in Europe with APOEL and Ferencváros.
