Report: Free agent Michael Parkhurst mulling potential move away from ATL

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

It’s by no means a formality that Michael Parkhurst will return to his role as Atlanta United captain, according to ESPN’s Taylor Twellman.

With Atlanta declining Parkhurst’s option to try and renegotiate a less expensive contract, the central defender is eligible for MLS free agency and has several other interested suitors, Twellman tweeted Tuesday.

Parkhurst, who will turn 35 in January, completed his ninth MLS season by winning his first MLS Cup, playing in all five of Atlanta’s playoff matches en route to the club’s first major trophy.

He had reached the final match of the MLS calendar four previous times with New England and Columbus before Atlanta’s 2-0 MLS Cup triumph over the Portland Timbers.

Overall, Parkhurst has made 281 league appearances, including 33 in the 2018 regular season.
