Rumor: Vancouver Whitecaps FC interested in South Korea’s Hwang In-beom?

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Rumor

Vancouver Whitecaps FC are in the midst of a roster rebuild under new head coach Marc Dos Santos. Could they look to South Korea for reinforcement?

That’s the word from Vancouver-based Twitter account Glass City FC, who says the Whitecaps are targeting Korean midfielder Hwang In-beom.

Hwang, 22, has spent most of his pro career to date with Daejeon Citizen, after making his debut in 2015. He went on loan to the military’s professional team earlier this year, as part of his mandated two-year national service requirement. But after helping his country win the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, the South Korean international’s national service was deemed complete and he returned to Daejeon.

Hwang has been linked to teams in the Bundesliga in recent months as well. Vancouver have found success with a Korean player in the past, as Y.P. Lee finished his playing career with the Whitecaps, making 66 appearances at left back between MLS regular-season and MLS Cup Playoffs action from 2012-13.
