UEFA Champions League: PSG and Liverpool have it all to do to qualify for knockout rounds

There will be plenty at stakes for both teams as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) get ready to host Liverpool in a UEFA Champions League Group C clash at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.

Both sides find themselves in a precarious spot four matches into their respective European campaigns with Liverpool in second spot with six points while PSG sit in third with five points.

In a tightly contested Group C where all four sides are separated by a mere two points, each team still has a chance to progress to the knockout rounds.

Here, we look at what PSG need to do on Wednesday to secure their progression to the round of 16.

The French giants will be eliminated from the competition should they lose at home against Liverpool and Napoli beat Red Star Belgrade. They will, however, keep their chances alive heading into the final Group C matchday should they draw or win on Wednesday.

With Liverpool set to take on leaders Napoli in their final group clash, the Parisian outfit will be very well placed to seal their advancement should they achieve a positive result against Liverpool.

In case of a PSG victory on Wednesday along with a Napoli win, the Ligue 1 club will leapfrog Liverpool in the table. They could advance to the last 16 with even a loss against Red Star in their final fixture should the English club be unable to beat Napoli in their matchday six clash.

In case of a draw, Liverpool will maintain a one-point lead over PSG in the table and qualification would come down to the results of the final matchday.

Now, we take a look at what Liverpool need to do to book their place in the knockouts.

The English club will seal progression on Wednesday should they beat PSG and Red Star fail to beat Napoli. Even if Jurgen Klopp’s men are unable to qualify on matchday five, they will get a second bite at the cherry when they host Napoli at Anfield in their final group clash.

Should the Reds beat the Serie A club by two clear goals in that clash, they will guarantee their progression irrespective of the result between Red Star and PSG due to their then superior head-to-head against Napoli.
