Report: Bastian Schweinsteiger’s return to Chicago Fire up in the air

TRANSFER TRACKER: Report

On Sunday, the Chicago Fire play their final match of the 2018 season when they host D.C. United (4:30pm ET | TV & streaming info). But could it be the last time Bastian Schweinsteiger suits up for the Men in Red?

Being that the German legend is out of contract after this season, it remains up in the air, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.

“I don’t know. That’s a question for the general manager or the owner,” Schweinsteiger said. “I still enjoy playing soccer. If they want me back, I’m enjoying living here. My wife and my family are also happy in Chicago, but when the moment comes, I’ll make my decision and we’ll see what happens.”

Schweinsteiger, 34, is wrapping up his second MLS season, having made a total of 54 appearances with 7 goals and 12 assists for the Fire and helping guide the team to the playoffs in 2017. Yet this season has not gone to plan, as the Fire languish below the playoff line heading into Decision Day presented by AT&T, and changes are expected after a tough season in the Windy City.
