Thierry Henry has been told he needs to discover and nurture the next Kylian Mbappe for Monaco

They have put an end to the mega-spending of 2013 when they bought Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Joao Mountinho and Anthony Martial.

But they are still investing in youngsters and bought Willem Geubbels, 17, from Lyon for £17.5million – with Henry’s task to get the best from youngsters and turn a profit like the club did with Mbappe’s £162m sale to PSG.

There are also big hopes for Khephren Thuram-Ulien, son of Lilian Thuram, who is in the Monaco B squad at 16.

And major summer signings were Aleksandr Golovin, 22, and Benjamin Henrichs, 21, who are young and have sell-on value for the French club.

“Thierry is both aware of the task ahead and eager to start his new job,” said Monaco chief executive Vadim Vasilyev

“He can count on our trust and all our support to bring a new dynamic to the team and carry out its mission. “

Henry succeeds Leonardo Jardim and returns to the club where he started his professional career before eventually heading to Highbury where he scored 228 goals for Arsenal.

On his backroom staff will be Patrick Kwame Ampadu, a coach at Arsenal’s academy and father of Chelsea star Ethan Ampadu, and Benfica Under-23 coach Joao Carlos Valado Tralhao.

Henry also faces a mouthwatering clash with ex-Arsenal team-mate when Monaco face Nice for a clash scheduled for December 8.

He has also been tipped to succeed by former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, although with a slight word of warning.

Wenger said: “Yes, of course. Thierry Henry is a good choice. He has a lot of credibility.

“He is very intelligent and understands football pretty well. That’s why he has everything it needs, like a lot of players on this level.

“But when you get started you must have a little bit of luck too.

“He is going to need a good attitude and he will have to make sacrifices. You have to sacrifice your whole life.”
