Schalke striker Mark Uth has been named in the Germany squad for the first time for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games against the Netherlands and France.
Uth, 27, is the only new face in a 23-man squad that boasts 16 Bundesliga players, as well as Jonas Hector of Bundesliga 2 side Cologne. Bayer Leverkusen teenager Kai Havertz, who made his senior international debut in the friendly draw with Peru in September, retains his place. Freiburg striker Nils Petersen misses out with a shoulder injury.
“We’ve been watching Mark Uth for a while now,” said Germany coach Joachim Löw. “He’s dynamic, quick and always poses a goal threat. Now we want to get to know him better.”
Something of a late bloomer, Cologne-born Uth made his professional debut in the colours of Dutch outfit Heerenveen in January 2013. He also spent time on loan at Heracles, before returning to Germany with Hoffenheim in summer 2015.
Although Uth is yet to score for new club Schalke this season, he has registered a shot on target every half-hour that he has played. He found the net 14 times for former club Hoffenheim in 2017/18, a tally bettered only by Petersen (15) and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski (29). He was capped once at youth international level by Germany’s U20s.

Germany take on the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 13 October, before travelling to Paris to face reigning world champions France on 16 October. Last month, Germany and France played out a goalless draw in the inaugural Nations League fixture at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
