Jose Mourinho has praised the referee for delaying Manchester United’s game against Valencia after they arrived late for kick-off, with the manager saying the police refused to give his side an escort to the ground

UEFA will consider reports from the match officials before deciding whether to take action against Manchester United for their late arrival for Tuesday’s Champions League tie at Old Trafford.

United’s coach was stuck in heavy traffic and kick-off for their Group H game against Valencia was put back five minutes to 8.05pm.

The club confirmed the reason for their delay in a tweet ahead of the game, blaming “significant traffic congestion” for their late arrival.

The game ended goalless, and it was United’s fourth home game without a win, following back-to-back defeats to Derby and West Ham and a draw with Wolves.

United are now without a win at Old Trafford in all competitions since the opening day of the season against Leicester.
