It is understood that the Red Devils sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action for Holland against France earlier this month, with Jose Mourinho a keen admirer.

But according to Mundo Deportivo, PSG are eyeing up a possible January move to thwart their rivals’ intentions.

It is claimed that Les Parisiens boss Thomas Tuchel is desperate to sign a central midfielder, and has identified de Jong as the perfect candidate.

Tuchel has been deploying Marquinhos as a makeshift midfielder, but could dip into the transfer market to bolster his squad as PSG look to win the Champions League for the first time.

But United are determined not to lose out on the youngster following a low-key summer of spending.

An Old Trafford source said: “The club decided to take a look at him as they have been getting rave reviews from elsewhere.

“Jose and the staff like the look of him. He can play in a few different roles and he looks comfortable wherever, which is a big plus.

“The scouts were already sure he is the real deal but his display against France only intensified that belief even further.

“He is a top class talent and it is clear to see why so many of the big teams in the Premier League and around Europe want him.”

De Jong has featured in 12 games in all competitions for Ajax this season, as the Dutch club sit second in the table.
