Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso claims winner and defends penalty decision

DeAndre Yedlin assisted on Newcastle’s lone goal, but it’s his late own goal that proved to be the difference in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory.

Marcos Alonso said he would be claiming Chelsea’s winning strike despite it going down as an own goal and also defended a controversial penalty decision as the Blues escaped with a 2-1 win at Newcastle on Sunday.

Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin deflected Alonso’s low drive goalwards and it found the back of the net in the 87th minute, but Alonso said he should get the credit.

“If the ball goes in the direction of the goal maybe it is mine,” Alonso told Sky Sports.

Alonso was also involved in Chelsea’s opening goal when Newcastle’s Fabian Schar brought him down in the box, and Eden Hazard converted the penalty.

Replays showed Schar got a touch to the ball first before making contact with Alonso, but the Chelsea player was confident the decision to give the penalty was correct.

“I think I touched the ball and got in front of the opponent. It’s not that I felt the contact and went down, he made me,” Alonso said.

After a summer of uncertainty over his future, Hazard played his first full 90 minutes under new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, and he said Chelsea were worthy of claiming the three points away from home.

“Everyone was thinking to draw when they scored but we are Chelsea and we never give up,” Hazard said. “We did well, created a lot of chances and we deserved to win. I feel tired tonight, but the whole team is tired but we have the points.”
