Inter Milan’s Luciano Spalletti fined 10,000 for ‘offensive’ outburst toward referee

Inter Milan’s Luciano Spalletti feels the side should have converted at least one of their many chances after their disappointing 1-0 loss to Sassuolo.

Domenico Berardi’s first-half penalty ended up being the game-winner for Sassuolo who held off Inter’s late charge at the Mapei Stadium.

Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti has been fined €10,000 and been publicly warned by Lega Serie A for an outburst toward the referee after the 1-0 loss to Sassuolo in the opener on Saturday.

Spalletti was sanctioned for using “extremely offensive language” toward Maurizio Mariani at the Mapei Stadium, which Sassuolo won through a penalty by Domenico Berardi in the 27th minute.

It was the first time since 2009 that a team coached by Spalletti has lost its season opener, but it was the fourth consecutive victory for Sassuolo over Inter.

The league also gave Torino coach Walter Mazzari a yellow card and issued a warning for encroaching the pitch and protesting a decision made by referee Marco Di Bello in the 81st minute of a 1-0 defeat against Roma on Saturday.
