Norwich battling Aston Villa to sign Ligue 1 striker Julio Tavares

Julio Tavares‘ prolific form for Dijon has attracted the attention of Championship quartet Norwich City, Aston Villa, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers

Aston Villa are interested in signing Julio Tavares on loan from Ligue 1 outfit Dijon but Norwich City are leading the race for the in-form striker, sources close to the player have told HITC.

Cape Verde international Tavares scored 12 times in the French top flight last season as Dijon sealed a very impressive eleventh placed finish.

And the 29-year-old has started the new campaign in terrific fashion too, scoring three times in his opening two games of 2018/19 including a brace in the 2-0 home win against Nantes on Saturday.

Though sources have told HITC that Tavares could be on his way to England before the end of August.

It is understood that Aston Villa had agreed a fee for the experienced frontman on deadline day earlier this month but ran out of time to get the deal completed. Steve Bruce’s side, however, are still hoping to sign Tavares on loan in the next week and a half.

But Norwich City have since entered the race. And, after initiating contact over the weekend, Daniel Farke’s team are now in discussions to bring Tavares to Carrow Road.

Any temporary deal is likely to have an option to buy at the end of the current campaign with Tavares valued at £2.5 million.

HITC sources claim that Norwich are currently the most likely destination for the 6ft 2ins attacker who is understood to be keen on testing himself in England after spending his entire career in France. Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic have also made tentative enquiries but Norwich and Villa are much further down the line as things stand.

Tavares has been at Dijon since 2012, scoring 67 times in all competitions to be come the club’s all-time record goalscorer.
