John Ogu on target as Hapoel Beer Sheva crash out of Uefa Champions League

The holding midfielder’s early goal gave his side hopes of overturning a heavy first-leg defeat, but for a second-half revival from the visitors

John Ogu was on target for Hapoel Beer Sheva in their 2-2 draw with Dinamo Zagreb in Tuesday’s Uefa Champions League second qualifying round, but the Israeli side crashed out 7-2 on aggregate.

Having lost 5-0 in Croatia last week, Beer Sheva had a herculean task in their hand at the Turner Stadium. But Ogu gave his side hope after finding the back of the net with a thumping header off a corner kick 14th minute into the encounter.

Petar Stojanovic’s own goal 20 minutes later saw the deficit reduced to three goals. But second-half goals from Mario Budimir and Izet Hajrovic ended the hopes of the Israeli champions.

Ogu and striker Anthony Nwakaeme saw out the entire duration of the tie, and will turn out for their club in the 2018-19 Europa League campaign instead.

Last season, the Camels also missed the chance of featuring in the elite club competition after they lost to Maribor on away goals; one that had the Nigeria international disappointed.
