Joel Matip to leave Liverpool’s U.S. tour with muscle injury

Jurgen Klopp believes the future is bright at Liverpool for Daniel Sturridge, with the striker proving his fitness in pre-season.

Christian Pulisic put in an inspired performance with two goals for Dortmund as they came from behind to defeat Liverpool.

Liverpool have confirmed that Joel Matip will be leaving their preseason tour of the United States to undergo rehabilitation on a muscle injury.

Matip limped off injured 22 minutes into Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte on Sunday after overhitting a pass and then complaining of discomfort in his upper leg.

Liverpool said they do not consider the injury to be a “long-term concern” but that the issue would mean Matip plays no part in the team’s two remaining International Champions Cup fixtures.

Matip is heading back to Merseyside and will continue his recovery at Melwood.

The centre-half has only recently returned from a thigh injury suffered in April that ended his 2017-18 season.

Speaking postmatch on Sunday, however, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said this latest setback is “not the same injury.”

Liverpool fly out to New Jersey on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Manchester City before they conclude their U.S. tour against Manchester United in Michigan on Saturday.
