Sunderland midfielder Wahbi Khazri has completed his move to French club St-Etienne, the Black Cats have announced.
The 27-year-old Tunisia international has signed a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee two-and-a-half years after arriving at the Stadium of Light from Bordeaux.
In a statement on the club’s official Twitter account, Sunderland said: “Wahbi Khazri has completed a move to French side @ASSEofficiel for an undisclosed fee. #SAFC would like to wish Wahbi good luck at his new club.”
Khazri was initially a big hit on Wearside after he was brought in by then manager Sam Allardyce in January 2016, but successor David Moyes was less impressed with his efforts the following season and in the wake of relegation from the Premier League, he was loaned to Rennes for the 2017-18 campaign.
New Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has been desperate to get him, as well as other high earners, off the books following a second successive relegation, and his departure will enable the club to make further progress with their summer recruitment programme ahead of a first – and he will hope, only – season in League One.
Khazri scored twice for his country as they failed to make it past the group stage at the World Cup finals in Russia, where they lost to both beaten semi-finalists, England and Belgium, but beat Panama.
