Report: Portland Timbers nearing deal for Argentine mid Tomas Conechny

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

The Portland Timbers have found success in the Argentine market over the years, most notably with Diego Valeri. Could they be set to sign another player from Argentina?

That’s the word from Paul Tenorio at The Athletic, who reported on Thursday that the Timbers are “in the final stages” of a deal to sign Tomas Conechny on loan from San Lorenzo, with an option to buy at the end of the MLS season.

Conechny, 20, has spent his young career to date with Argentine Primera outfit San Lorenzo, where he made his professional debut in 2016. Rumored to be in the sights of European sides over the years, Conechny played alongside current Timbers midfielder Sebastian Blanco at San Lorenzo.

The attacking midfielder, said to be capable of playing as a No. 10, played for Argentina at the 2017 South American Youth Football Championship, widely regarded as one of the best international youth tournaments in the world and a fertile ground for South American prospects, and he also played at the 2017 U-20 World Cup.
